Gallery: Fagus (Tasmania, Australia) - April 2017
The fagus or the Tasmanian Beech (Nothofagus gunnii) is endemic to Tasmania and also happens to be Australia’s only alpine deciduous tree. That sounds like it isn’t a great deal, but amidst the dense rainforests and evergreen alpine scrub in Tasmania, the fagus sticks out due to its colours (changes from green to red to gold in autumn), its beautiful shape, and small hardy structure - which often includes a twisted bunch of hard branches and roots (giving it an alternate name - the tanglefoot).
I love the fagus and photographing its pretty leaves with its texture and serrated edges can keep me occupied for hours. Here’s a few images taken in the Cradle Mountain region in April, 2017.
