THE WESTERN GHATS & The Andaman ISLANDS
The Western Ghats are home to some of the most beautiful endemics. The habitats covered during this tour include low-lying wet forests, high altitude grasslands, dry scrub and everything in between. Expect to see a wide variety of birds, amphibians, and if lucky - some very delightful mammals and reptiles.
The Andaman Islands are a group of tropical islands in the Bay of Bengal. Home to over 20 endemic species of birds, they also host a number of species which are difficult to see anywhere else in India. The calm blue seas and coral reefs are renowned as world class sites for diving and snorkelling.
Total number of species expected: Over 300
Time required: 2 weeks
North west & west india
The vast open expanses of these parts of India host thousands of migrant birds in the winter and some rare and range-restricted residents found nowhere else in the world. We’ll explore large wetlands, thorny scrub and forests, salt pans, desert, grasslands and much more!
In the middle of it all, we’ll find some time to visit the Taj Mahal and several other historical sites as well as immerse ourselves in the local cuisine and culture.
Total number of species expected: Almost 350
Time required: 2-3 weeks
North india & the himalayan foothills
The flat, highly fertile northern plains of India are dotted with wetlands, riverine ecosystems and dry forests that play host to an extraordinary number of resident and migratory species in the winters - all amidst one of the most densely populated and culturally rich areas in the world!
The forests of the Himalayan foothills are home to the enigmatic tiger and elephant, as well as rich and diverse birdlife. The winters are when a number of species of the higher Himalayas are driven down to lower altitudes and the forests here are extremely productive for a large number of species.
Total number of species expected: Over 350
Time required: 2 weeks
North east india
Perhaps the richest and most biodiverse region outside of the Amazon rainforest, the North Eastern states of India include dense rainforests, high altitude passes, wet marshlands and swamps, etc - home to elephants, tigers, the one-horned rhinoceros and several other elusive mammals.
The birdlife isn’t lacking either - with multiple species of hornbills, pheasants, a large number of migratory waterfowl, owls, tiny wren-babblers, shortwings and many more joining the ensemble in a region that actually hosts almost 2/3rds of all of India’s birdlife.
Total number of species expected: Almost 400
Time required: 3 weeks
