November 2019 Birds and mammals around Tasmania

Birds and mammals of tasmania

Tasmania’s small size belies it’s varied landscapes and fauna. With dry bush, wet rainforests, snow covered highlands, damp grasslands, coastal heath, and vast pastures all crammed into a small space, it is no wonder that Tasmania is home to such a diverse bunch of birds and mammals.

12 species of endemic birds as well as several endemic subspecies reside on this island, and some species are far easier to see here than on the mainland. Tasmania is also amongst the best places in the world to view high densities of mammals: Pademelons, Quolls, Platypus, Echidnas, Wallabies, Possums and of course, the Tasmanian Devils are all possible here without much difficulty and some good fortune.

The rocky shores provide shelter for nesting penguins and shearwaters. while the rough Southern Ocean and the nearby oceanic shelf edge combine to make Tasmania one of the top pelagic birding sites in the world.

All this coupled with Tasmania’s stunning landscape in the background makes this island a must-visit for any nature lover in the world.
